Gavant and Spiral donate an iPad app for Wildwood School
October 16, 2013 - For immediate release - Troy, NY
Gavant Software and Spiral Design Studio worked together with the Wildwood School to design Expression Arcade, a set of computer games to help teach social skills to students with developmental disabilities.
Tammi Crisafulli and Gwen Buckley, social workers at Wildwood, designed a game over ten years ago to help with socialization of students on the autism spectrum. It was a game of questions on index cards. The game was becoming old and they felt a computer game would bring a renewed level of excitement for their students.
Robert Clancy’s team at Spiral Design, developed, designed and programmed the games named Expression Arcade. This great partnership delivered a set of games to help the Wildwood students address feelings of anger, happiness and fear to help with social skills. “My staff and I not only had fun creating the Expression Arcade, but we’re also honored to be a part of something that also helps young people with developmental disabilities”, said Robert Clancy in a recent interview.
Jon Kloptosky’s team at Gavant Software initially came up with the slot machine idea and developed the Expression Arcade games to become a set of Apple iPad games.
Jon Kloptosky explains, “I had the opportunity to tour Wildwood and see first-hand the students’ interaction with one another around the iPad. These technology platforms have a way of blurring the lines between education and games and the students were fully engaged. It was inspiring. For all the apps that exist, there aren’t many that focus on the development and reinforcement of social and interpersonal interaction. These are skills that many of us take for granted. The team at Gavant is very proud to have an opportunity to contribute toward that development effort.”
Robert Clancy adds, “The marriage of creativity and technology between my company, Spiral Design Studio and Gavant Software was a perfect match to bring Wildwood School’s idea to life. Seeing the app in action with the students at Wildwood School made it well worth it. You can’t put a price on that.”
Robert Clancy encourages those interested in this new application to download the application. “The people who make the biggest difference in the world are the people who make small ones each and every day and I can only hope that this app has made that difference for many communities across the country.”
The ExpressionArcade app is publically available as a free download for iPad on the iTunes App Store at https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/expressionarcade/id684396188.
